I AM A TREE HUGGER

DENR NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION DISTRIBUTES TRASH BINS
The regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the National Capital Region (DENR NCR) on February 3, 2023, inked a memorandum of agreement with officials of 17 barangays, 2 local government unit offices, and the Northern Police District (NPD) for the distribution of trash bins in support of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program.
DENR National Capital Region Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan led the signing of the MOA at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center (NAPWC) in Quezon City. “We initially distributed 20 of 100 sets of trash bins to avoid a big crowd during the MOA signing, in keeping with existing public health protocols,” Caancan said. Each set comprises four (4) units of color-coded trash bins, green for biodegradable materials, black for non-biodegradable, red for recyclables, and yellow for hazardous waste.
Director Caancan expressed her gratitude for the “perfect” attendance of officials of recipient barangays despite their hectic schedules. She likewise attributed the success of last year’s implementation of the Manila Bay rehabilitation to the strong partnership with the local government units and the barangays. “We are just the enabler, providing support, but the greater effort is with the LGUs and barangays, especially in mobilizing the people. Your leadership is very critical at the grassroots level,” she said.
Caancan reported that the regional office distributed 20 paddle boats and 40 rickshaw trikes last year to barangays in support of their solid waste management programs. The paddle boats, she said, were intended to collect solid waste from the waterways near or within the jurisdiction of recipient barangays while the rickshaw trikes will be used to collect segregated waste from households that could not be reached by garbage trucks due to narrow alleys.
She also said that floating trash nets were installed by the regional office in 12 waterways in the cities of Marikina, Malabon, Caloocan, Valenzuela, San Juan, and the municipality of Pateros. Further, a 320-meter trash net/trap was mounted along the coast of Tanza Marine Tree Park (TMTP) in Navotas City while another 990-meter trash net was installed at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP) to prevent pollution and human encroachment of protected areas.
The regional official urged the recipient barangays to closely coordinate with any of the four (4) Metropolitan Environmental Offices for technical assistance in their environmental protection and solid waste management programs.
The recipients of trash bins include Brgy. 177, Caloocan; Tonsuya, Malabon; Tanza Uno, Navotas; Arkong Bato, Valenzuela; San Nicolas and Sumilang, Pasig; Libis and San Bartolome, Quezon City; Brgy. 402, Manila; Pasadeña, San Juan; Tejeros, Makati; Brgy. 143, Pasay; Poblacion, Pateros; Talon Uno, Las Piñas; Sucat, Muntinlupa; Marcelo Green, Parañaque; and Western Bicutan, Taguig.
Aside from these barangays, the national government agency PNP-Northern Police District (NPD) received three (3) sets of trash bins while the City Environmental Management Office-Marikina (CEMO-Marikina) and Makati-Department of Environmental Services (Makati-DES) both received a set of trash bins.
DENR NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION LAUNCH PINAS BASURA BUSTER PBB

DENR National Capital Region, through its Environmental Management Bureau-National Capital Region (EMB-NCR), Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Group (RSCIG), and Metropolitan Environmental Office-East (MEO-East), led the regional launching of Pinas: Basura Buster (PBB) Mascot and Basura Buster Mobile Game app on Tuesday, 31 January 2023 at Kalumpang Elementary School in Marikina City.
Around 300 Grade III students from ten (10) public elementary schools in Marikina City attended the event which was organized in partnership with the Schools Division Office (SDO) of the Department of Education-Marikina City and support from the Philippine Information Agency-National Capital Region (PIA-NCR).
Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) chief and concurrent RSCIG head Christopher C. Villarin represented the regional office. He thanked SDO Marikina for co-organizing the event and their continuous support of the environmental education program of DENR National Capital Region.
PBB is DENR’s Solid Waste Management (SWM) mascot while Basura Buster is an android-based mobile game application. Both are intended to popularize the concept and practice of proper solid waste management among the youth and encourage waste segregation at home.
Apart from introducing PBB and the Basura Buster game app, the event also showcased a puppet show entitled “Inang Kalikasan” by the PIA Puppet Theater. The RSCIG likewise facilitated an interactive learning game called “Hiwalay kung Hiwalay” which asks the participants to identify the type of waste mentioned in by the game host.
SDO Marikina mobilized the Youth for Environment in Schools-Organization (YES-O) faculty advisers and student officials in support of the event.
Ms. Rishelle Guevarra, representing the School Governance and Operation Division (SGOD) of SDO Marikina, thanked the DENR National Capital Region. She also extended the wish of their office to renew the Memorandum of Agreement it inked with the regional office three years ago. “Since our partnership has been productive, our Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Sheryll T. Gayola, wants to extend and strengthen our work together”, Guevarra said.
The SDO Marikina is one of the DepEd offices of Metro Manila that DENR National Capital Region has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on, among other things, urban greening and environmental education.
“The directive of our Regional Executive Director, Ms. Jacqueline A. Caancan on building partnerships has always been clear”, Mr. Villarin explained. “RED Caancan favors a whole-of-nation approach in resolving environmental issues. She believes that people should be involved in defining and finding solutions to our environmental woes, hence her instruction to us to actively seek and explore avenues for environmental partnership.”
DENR National Capital Region aims to launch PBB and Basura Buster game app in other cities and parts of Metro Manila as well.
