Employees of DENR National Capital Region proudly display the lanterns they made using recycled and indigenous materials during the annual Christmas Lighting ceremonies at the National Ecology Center (NEC) compound in Quezon City last Thursday, 1 December 2022.
The lanterns served as their entry for the first-ever Parol making contest the management has organized in celebration of the season. “We [judges] were all actually surprised by the ingenuity and talent of our employees, coming out with these original and unique lanterns”, Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan said, as one by one, the entries were lit with colorful dancing LEDs.
A total of 13 lanterns were displayed, representing the different divisions and offices of the regional office, including the Environmental Management Bureau-National Capital Region (EMB-NCR) and the four Metropolitan Environmental Offices (MEOs). “We’ll surely have a hard time judging the winner of the contest as each entry is meticulously crafted and thought of”, Director Caancan observed.
Apart from the lanterns being made of recycled and indigenous materials, part of the criteria for judging is that the entries should also conform and express the theme of the contest: “Liwanag ng Pag-asa para sa Magandang Bukas”.
“We want to light up the spirits of our employees and clients, and other people who visit the NEC, to remind them of the star of Bethlehem that brought hope and happiness to all of us”, Director Caancan said, explaining the theme. “We also want our employees to be reminded of the humble manger where Christ was born and ask them to use recycled and indigenous materials”.
The panel of judges includes Assistant Regional Directors Manuel T. Escasura (Management Services), Engr. Ignacio R. Almira, Jr. (Technical Services), Ms. Reena de Leon Buena of the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), and Mr. Jesse Tanchanco of Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST). The winner/s of the contest will be announced on December 16, 2022, during the Year-End celebration of the regional office.
