Amphibious dredging heavy equipment and vehicles from DPWH work their way through accumulated mud and silt along the banks of the Marikina River at Barangay Santolan in Pasig City. The dredging operation is part of the ongoing Marikina River Restoration Project under the Task Force Build Back Better headed by DENR Sec. Roy A. Cimatu and DPWH Sec. Mark A. Villar.
The project aims to widen and deepen the Marikina River and increase its capacity to absorb excess rainwater during heavy downpours and prevent flooding in low-lying cities traversed by the Marikina-Pasig River.
The project has two phases: the first one was completed last July and involved the restoration of Marikina River from Barangays Barangka, Calumpang, and Industrial Valley Complex in Marikina City. The current dredging operations in Pasig City are part of the second phase of the project. The project is also connected to the ongoing rehabilitation of rivers and esteros connecting to Manila Bay.
