DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu inspected the on-going construction of floodgates and Water Treatment Facility at the Baywalk Area, Roxas Boulevard in Malate, Manila on Thursday, 20 February 2020.
The secretary was accompanied by Asec. Roberto T. Almadin and Manila Bay Cleanup Operations Head, Gen. Alfredo Andres of the MMDA, and DENR National Capital Region West Field Office Deputy Chief Environmental Officer For. Rodelina De Villa and technical personnel. They were met by the project engineers who showed the progress of the construction.
The project engineers assured the Secretary that the floodgates can pump out 2000 liters/per minute of floodwaters or a total of 1.2 million liters per day, effectively preventing flooding in the area during rainy seasons. The water treatment facility also capable of treating 500,000 liters of wastewater per day.
The construction of the floodgates and water treatment facility is part of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program, a multi-year, inter-agency effort aimed in making the waters of Manila Bay safe for swimming and other recreational activities.
