DENR National Capital Region through its Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and West Field Office (WFO), hosted the mangrove tree planting activity initiated by the office of DENR Undersecretary for Special Concerns, Edilberto D. Leonardo, on Thursday, 25 February 2021, at the Baseco beach area in Port Area, Tondo, Manila.

Members of the Manila Police District headed by PBGen. Leo Manaog Francisco joined the activity, together with representatives from the Department of Public Services (DPS) of Manila City Government, officials, and staff of Barangay 649, Baseco led by Punong Barangay Diana Espinosa, and other community-based organizations.

The participants were acknowledged by DENR National Capital Region Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services, Engr. Ignacio R. Almira, Jr., CDD Chief Aida E. Esguerra, and Justin de Ramos, OIC-Chief for the Coastal Resources and Foreshore Management Section.

Overall, the participants planted 300 Nipa (Nypa fruticans) saplings, 300 Bakawan (Rhizophora sp.) propagules, and 10 Talisay (Terminalia catappa) tree. DENR National Capital Region is leading efforts to rehabilitate the coast of Baseco by planting mangroves and other beach-type species to help improve water quality in the area in line with the cleanup of Manila Bay.
