DENR National Capital Region, through its East Field Office (EFO), led a cleanup activity at Barangay Ugong, Pasig City together with personnel from the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and Estero Rangers assigned in the area.
Joining them are representatives from Barangay Ugong, Bantay Ilog, Solid Waste Management Office (SWMO), and City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Pasig City.
The team specifically targeted water hyacinths which have been clogging parts of the Marikina River in recent months.
The effort resulted in the removal of two-hundred fifty (250) sacks of various wastes from the Marikina River, composed mostly of water hyacinths, plastic food and beverage packaging, and cigarette butts.
Marikina River is part of the Pasig-Marikina-San Juan (PAMARISAN) River System, one of the three major river systems of Metro Manila. Trash is thrown into the river system eventually finds its way into Manila Bay and adds to its pollution load.
DENR National Capital Region is leading efforts in Metro Manila to clean and rehabilitate Manila Bay. Regular cleanups organized by its four field offices within their respective areas of concern are part of these efforts.
