DENR National Capital Region through its Production Forest Management Section (PFMS), teamed up with the office of Quezon City District 2 Representative, Hon. Precious Hipolito-Castelo and Councilor Winston T. Castelo in organizing a Community PanTREE at Barangay Holy Spirit in Quezon City on Tuesday, 6 July 2021.
The regional office gave away 650 seedlings of fruit-bearing trees and 1,900 seedlings of vegetables to the more than one hundred residents who participated in the activity. Apart from Rep. Hipolito-Castelo and Coun. Castelo, likewise present to assist in the activity are officials of Barangay Holy Spirit led by Kagawad Maximo “Bunso” Valmocina.
The Community PanTREE is DENR National Capital Region’s program of providing free seedlings of fruit-bearing trees and vegetables to Metro Manila residents. It was originally launched last April 22 in time with the celebration of Earth Day.
DENR National Capital Region Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan ordered the roll-out of the project to different communities in Metro Manila following its success. “Our original intention was to encourage people to plant trees as a form of therapy, to somehow help them cope with the mental stress caused by the pandemic, and at the same time provide them with a sustainable source of healthy food”, Director Caancan explained. “But since having received numerous requests and inquiries from different sectors about the project, we have decided to do the rounds in Metro Manila and bring the Community PanTREE closer to the people in partnership with public and private organizations”, she added.
