DENR National Capital Region conducted a virtual awarding ceremony for the winners of the first ever Manila Bay Urban Rivers Photography Contest on Friday, 30 July 2021.
Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan, together with her Assistant Regional Directors—Dr. Al O. Orolfo for Management Services, Engr. Ignacio R. Almira, Jr. for Technical Services), and Martin Despi for Special Concerns—led the awarding ceremonies, with DENR Undersecretary for Policy, Planning and International Affairs, Atty. Jonas R. Leones, as guest of honor.
Out of the 91 entries, Richmond Tan Chi emerged as Grand Champion and People’s Choice Awardee, with his captivating photo of Pasig River at dusk. Gregorio Dantes, Jr.’s snapshot of urban farming on the flood plains of Marikina City bagged First Runner-Up, while Macbeth Omega and Jomar Idloy secured Second and Third Runner-Up respectively. All winners receive cash prizes, trophy, and certificates.
Director Caancan said the contest was launched to raise awareness of the ongoing rehabilitation of rivers and esteros of Metro Manila and Manila Bay. “A picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words”, Director Caancan explained. “We meant to harness, through this contest, the power of photos to convey the message behind the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program and move people into supporting our collective effort of making Manila Bay clean and safe for everyone to enjoy and benefit from”, she added.
