DENR National Capital Region, through its East Field Office (EFO), conducted a cleanup covering a portion of Marikina River in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City on Wednesday, 3 November 2021.
Ten (10) EFO personnel and eleven (11) Estero Rangers participated in the cleanup. They removed two hundred sacks of wastes from the river composed mostly of water hyacinths, plastic containers of food and other consumer products, wood, and dried branches of trees.
Marikina River is part of the Pasig-Marikina-San Juan (PAMARISAN) River System, one of the 3 major river systems of Metro Manila. It runs 66.81 kilometers long and cuts through several heavily populated urban centers, namely Quezon City, Marikina City, and Pasig City in Metro Manila; and the municipalities of San Mateo and Rodriguez in Rizal Province.
The trash that gets into the Marikina River eventually winds down to Manila Bay due to gravity and water flow.As the lead coordinating body for the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program in Metron Manila, DENR National Capital Region is regularly organizing cleanup activities in Marikina River and other waterways of the region to prevent trash and other debris from reaching Manila Bay.
The regional office is also regularly conducting Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to relevant stakeholders on responsible waste management and the many benefits we can derive from a clean and healthy environment.
