The cleanup covered around 100 meters of Mabuhay Creek which drains water from Barangay Sta. Lucia, Pasig City and adjoining barangays of Cainta, Rizal. Mabuhay Creek flows out onto Manggahan Floodway, a 10-kilometer long manmade river built in the early 80s to ease flooding in the area by diverting excess rainwater from the Marikina River to Laguna de Bay.
The activity resulted in the removal of 8 sacks of mixed wastes from the waterway—composed mostly of water hyacinths, plastic food and beverage packaging, and other solid waste residuals. The cleanup is in line with the on-going rehabilitation of Manila Bay. DENR National Capital Region is leading efforts to clean esteros and rivers of Metro Manila in compliance with the continuing Mandamus of the Supreme Court on the cleanup and rehabilitation of Manila Bay.
