DENR National Capital Region, through its Protected Areas and Biodiversity Management Section (PAMBS), led the conduct of the annual Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) for Metro Manila on Thursday, 11 January 2023.
They were joined by the DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office-North (MEO-North) and members of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP). The team visited Barangays Malanday and Tagalag in Valenzuela City. The AWC is a regional program of Wetlands International, a global not-for-profit organization, that promotes public participation in monitoring the distribution and populations of waterbirds and the status of wetlands. Done every January of the year, the results of the AWC are used to guide policymakers and experts in crafting interventions addressing current and potential threats to waterbird populations and their habitats.
