The South Field Office (SFO) of DENR National Capital Region led the celebration of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP) on Saturday, 18 September 2021.

The activity was led by SFO Chief Environmental Officer Bobby Tagapan. Joining CEO Tagapan are SFO personnel and Estero Rangers assigned in the protected area, as well as some DPWH maintenance workers.

The effort resulted in the recovery of more than 70 sacks of mixed wastes from the shoreline of Long Island, one of the two islands that comprise the LPPWP.

The team collected more than a hundred empty lighters and other items such as pieces of plastic and styrofoam food and beverage packaging, used clothes and slippers, water hyacinths, and, most notably, used face masks.

The Philippines has been a consistent top participant in the ICC, with thousands of volunteers showing up during past cleanup activities, especially here in Metro Manila. But due to public health considerations, DENR National Capital Region decided to limit participants in this year’s cleanup activities to its personnel.

Instead, the regional office encouraged volunteers to organize “cleanup bubbles” – i.e., cleanups done in the safety of the participant’s home or community, and the company of their immediate family members – in line with the “ICC in a Bubble” campaign.
