DENR National Capital Region and the Rotary Club of Quezon City (District 3780) planted around 400 bamboo saplings inside the La Mesa Watershed Reservation Area in Quezon City on Friday, 18 September 2020.
The activity is part of the celebration of World Bamboo Day under the theme: "Pamanang Kawayan: Luntiang Ginto ng Kagubatan". DENR-NCR Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan, together with Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services, Engr. Ignacio R. Almira, Jr., Conservation and Development Division Chief and concurrent East Field Office (EFO) Chief Environmental Officer, Forester Aida E. Esguerra, and Production Forest Management Section (PFMS) Chief Arturo G. Calderon welcomed the members of the rotary club led by District Governor Johnny Gaw Yu.
The DENR under the leadership of Secretary Roy A. Cimatu is actively campaigning for the adoption of bamboo as an alternative to traditional hardwood building materials. The fast-growing plant—technically a grass, not a tree—could help eliminate the need to cut trees in the forest, thereby mitigating the impact of climate change by reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Director Caancan acknowledged the Rotary Club Q.C. for choosing the La Mesa Watershed as the site for their tree planting activity for World Bamboo Day. She also encouraged them to regularly visit the site and check on the growth of the bamboo they planted. “Tree planting is but the start of the process of our endeavor to regreen Metro Manila. The more important part is ensuring the survival and full growth of each plant that we have planted today, that they receive nurturing from us so that they nurture us back”, Director Caancan emphasized.
Representatives from the DENR Forest Management Bureau led by Assistant Director Edna D. Nuestro also joined the bamboo tree planting activity held simultaneously in other parts of the country.
