DENR NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION AND METEKA GMBH MEETING

DENR National Capital Region Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan (fifth from left) receives METEKA GmbH Managing Director Roland Katschnig (sixth from left) at her office on Tuesday, 11 October 2022.
Katschnig was visiting the country to observe the operations and handling of healthcare waste of two hospitals in the National Capital Region (NCR). His visit is part of the project “Reduction of unintentionally-produced persistent organic pollutants and mercury through an environmentally-sound approach on health care wastes management in the Philippines with a special focus on the pandemic” being implemented jointly by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the DENR Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).
The project aims to provide support to the healthcare system of the Philippines by facilitating the adoption of global best environmental and health practices in the management of infectious medical wastes – particularly from COVID-19 – and introduce innovative and best available nonburn treatment technologies for the treatment of medical wastes, facilitate access to financing, and to link local governments and other players to public and private investments.
Director Caancan and Katschnig initially met at the UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna Austria on August 16 – 18, 2022 for the validation workshop on the project. Director Caancan headed the Philippine delegation for the workshop. Katschnig was accompanied by DENR EMB National Capital Region Director, Atty. Michael Drake Matias (fourth from left) and his staff.
