DENR Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) personnel accompany Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) staff in their monthly monitoring of Apugan Cave at the La Mesa Water Reservation area in Quezon City on Thursday, 19 January 2023.
MGB Geologists Ross Dominic Agot and Ruth Madridco assisted the PAMBS in assessing a spot inside the cave that appears to be sinking. Their initial findings revealed a possible sinkhole and advised the PAMBS to secure the area. Apugan cave is a Class II cave under DENR Memorandum Circular No. 2007-04. Caves under this category are those which have sections having hazardous conditions and contain sensitive geological, biological, archeological, cultural, historical, and biological values or high-quality ecosystems. Depending on the conditions, it may be necessary to close sections of these caves seasonally or permanently for safety and conservation purposes. DENR National Capital Region is in charge of protecting, conserving, and developing Apugan, the only known natural cave in Metro Manila.
