The DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office-West (MEO-West) conducted a clean-up activity at the Dolomite Beach area in Ermita, Manila on Monday, 25 July 2022, to remove the mass of water hyacinths that gathered on its shores following a week of incessant rains and winds. Led by Forester Rodelina M. De Villa, OIC Director of MEO-West, the activity resulted in the removal of 1,597 sacks of water hyacinths from the beach. These were hauled by the Department of Public Services of the City of Manila. Water hyacinths are usually found in rivers and esteros, but rains flush these aquatic plants—together with other trash thrown into the waterway—out to Manila Bay. Strong southwest monsoon (𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘵) winds, however, drive the water hyacinths and trash back to the shore. The cleanup activity is part of the ongoing rehabilitation and cleanup of Manila Bay.
