The DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office-South (MEO-South) joined the Maritime Security and Law Enforcement Command (MARSLEC) of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the Taguig City government in the cleanup of Hagonoy Creek in New Lower Bicutan, Taguig City.
Around 105 volunteers from MEO-South, Estero Rangers, MARSLEC, MMDA, Taguig City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Barangays Hagonoy, and New Lower Bicutan, participated in the cleanup.
The cleanup was initiated by MARSLEC under the leadership of Commander Rosenda Abinoja III and is part of their pre-celebration activities for the 8th Founding Anniversary of PCG on September 13, 2022. The action resulted in recovering 700 sacks of mixed solid wastes composed mainly of plastic packaging materials.
Hagonoy Creek is one of the tributaries of Manila Bay, connecting the historic bay with Laguna Lake via the Pasig River. Trash thrown in the waterway stalls the flow of water and cause flooding in the area and other environmental concerns. The cleanup was conducted in line with the rehabilitation of Manila Bay.
