DENR Undersecretary Analiza Rebuelta-Teh led the inspection of on-going dredging operations in Tullahan- Tinajeros River on Wednesday, 16 September 2020.
The project that was launched in February 2020 by the DENR and San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is an important component of the Manila Bay rehabilitation program, as it is aimed at removing an estimated 1 million cubic meter of silt and garbage from the river bottom. Dredging the 5.12 kilometer stretch of the river system will help clean and, at the same time, deepen and increase its capacity to handle heavy rains and allow floodwaters to drain freely into the Manila Bay. The dredging operation takes place from Barangay Catmon in Malabon City to Barangay Bagumbayan South in Navotas City to eliminate sediments that damage the water quality of the waterway
The project is divided into five phases: Phase 1 would involve dredging the part of the Tullahan-Tinajeros River from Manila Bay to Tonsuya Bridge; Phase 2 from Tonsuya Bridge to Lambingan Bridge; Phase 3 from Lambingan Bridge to Tinajeros Bridge; Phase 4 from Tinajeros Bridge to Tullahan Bridge, and Phase 5 from Tullahan Bridge up to Potrero. The Tullahan-Tinajeros River System spans 27 kilometers, from La Mesa Water Reservoir in Fairview, Quezon City, all the way to the mouth of Manila Bay at Centennial Park in Navotas City. It is one of the most polluted waterways in Metro Manila and a major tributary of Manila Bay.
Joining USec. Teh in the inspection are representatives from the North Field Office (NFO) of the DENR National Capital Region led by DCEO Olga Arzadon.
