DENR NCR Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan led the turn-over of waste collection trikes to Barangays Bagbag, Batasan Hills, Greater Lagro, Talayan, and UP Campus of Quezon City on Tuesday, 19 January 2021 held at the National Ecology Center compound in Diliman, Quezon City.
Bagbag Environment Officer Roderick Capitolo; Batasan Hills Kagawad Luming de Guzman; Greater Lagro Kagawad Valdy M. Torres; Talayan Kagawad Marcelina Sumilang; and, UP Campus Chairwoman Zenaida Lectura was on hand to receive the trikes.
The regional office provided the barangays with waste collection trikes to support the operation of their Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and strengthen their compliance with Republic Act No. 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000).
Section 32 of RA 9003 requires the establishment of an MRF in every barangay or cluster of barangays.
MRFs are an essential part of the local waste management program as it helps to reduce the amount of waste brought to landfills through the recovery of recyclable materials from the waste produced by the barangay. The recovered materials may then later be sold to end-user manufacturers and provide extra income to the barangay. Some MRFs also receive and process biodegradable waste into compost material.
The turn-over ceremony was witnessed by DENR National Capital Region officials led by Conservation and Development Division (CDD) Chief, Forester Aida Esguerra; Concurrent East Field Office (EFO) Deputy Chief Environment Officer (DCEO) Forester Florencio Diwa, Jr., and Manila Bay Site Coordinating Management Office (MBSCMO) Focal Person, Forester Haidee D. Pabalate.
