SM Prime Holdings, Inc. adopts Parañaque River and Tripa de Gallina

April 2, 2019

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on the rehabilitation of Parañaque River and Estero Tripa de Gallina.

The signing took place on Tuesday, 2 April 2019, at the DENR Central Office in Quezon City. Mr. Henry Sy, Jr. and Jeffrey Lim, owner and president of SM Prime Holdings, Inc. respectively, represented the company while Sec. Roy A. Cimatu represented the agency. Also present are Mayor Antonio G. Calixto of Pasay City and City Administrator Ding Soriano of Paranaque City.

The agreement was made under the Adopt-an-Estero/Water Body Program of the agency and is the second such agreement entered by DENR following the launch of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program in January.

Under the MOU, the company agrees to help DENR and the city governments of Paranaque and Pasay City in lowering the coliform level in the adopted water bodies to 200 MPN/ml, making it safe to propagate fish and other aquatic resources.

DENR National Capital Region Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan stood witness to the ceremony which she described as "critical" to the success of the Manila Bay rehabilitation program.

"Most pollutants come from the rivers and waterways that feed Manila Bay", she explained. If we fail to address the source of pollution, RD Caancan says, "it would not matter how many times we do coastal cleanups as the garbage and other pollutants from our esteros will eventually find their way to the historic bay."
