DENR National Capital Region kicked off the Zero Waste Month with a school visit (Dalaw Turo) on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Quezon City Polytechnic University in Novaliches, Quezon City.

Mr. Arizol Abad and Ms. Mara Alcaraz of the Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO) led a lecture on the current status of Metro Manila’s environment, and its battle against the intensifying pollution caused by unplanned urbanization and improper waste management.

The lecture—attended by 120 NSTP students and their advisers—aims to encourage the participants to shift to a more sustainable lifestyle and help reduce their ecological footprint by practicing the 7 Rs of Waste Management, i.e., “Refuse”, “Reduce”, “Reuse”, “Recycle”, “Repurpose”, “Repair”, and “Rot”.

The month of January is declared as Zero Waste Month, as mandated by Presidential Proclamation No. 760 series of 2014. Zero Waste Month is also pursuant to Republic Act 9003 also known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
