DENR National Capital Region orients SK leaders on ENR issues

Around 120 officials of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) leaders from Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela and Quezon City got a briefer on environment and natural resources (ENR) issues of Metro Manila after attending a forum organized by DENR National Capital Region and EMB National Capital Region last July 30 and August 1, 2018.

The 2-day learning event aims to inform and explain the role of SK in addressing ENR issues and in the enforcement of applicable environmental regulations in their respective area of responsibility, with particular focus on solid waste management, clean water, clean air, and degradation of Manila Bay and its tributaries.

Ms. Sally Aguinaldo, head of the Environmental Education and Information Unit (EEIU) of EMB-NCR discussed Ambisyon Natin 2040 (Philippine Development Plan) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) while Mr. Christopher C. Villarin, head of the Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO) of DENR National Capital Region gave a talk on the state of environment and natural resources of Metro Manila and the formation of a Green Brigade for the MANATUTI River System.

Mr. Mansueto Bolivar, Chief of the Solid Waste Management Section of EMB-NCR, discussed the salient points of Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act 9003); Mr. Jonas Lazo, Senior Ecosystems Management Specialist (SEMS), on the other hand, explained the Supreme Court mandamus on Manila Bay; while Ms. Anabelle Cubacub, SEMS, and  Engr. Mavic Quides, Ambient Monitoring Section Chief, talked about climate change and Clean Water Act and Adapt-an-Estero Waterbody Program respectively.

Dr. Patricia Licup, Program Head, Training & Capacity Development of ICTSI Foundation Inc., shared the PAROLA experience on Education for Sustainable Development while Mr. Vermon Timbas, Information Officer of EEID EMB-Central Office, explained their advocacy platform Greenducation. Finally, Mr. Robbie Feliciano, Head Secretariat of Task Force Tayo ang Kalikasan introduced the concept of Tayo ang Kalikasan.
