DENR National Capital Region spearheads celebration of Philippine Arbor Day

June 25, 2018

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) spearheaded the national celebration of 2018 Philippine Arbor Day (PAD) for the first time on Monday, 25 June 2018 at the La Mesa Water Reservation Area in Quezon City.

The celebration commenced with the first-ever Arbor Day Challenge—composed of six (6) stations with different physical and mental challenges linked to Arbor Day and forestry related concepts. This was participated by employees from different divisions of DENR National Capital Region and Environmental Management Bureau-National Capital Region (EMB-NCR).

Alongside the Arbor Day Challenge are tree planting activities participated by employees and top officials of DENR led by Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Rodolfo C. Garcia; Head Executive Assistant Mario F. Chan; Undersecretary for Policy, Planning, and International Affairs Atty. Joseph R. Leones; Assistant Secretary for Field Operations-Luzon Joselin Marcus E. Fragada.

Also attending the festivities are Manila Waterworks Sewerage System Administrator PDDG Reynaldo V. Velasco and representatives of Manila Water Company Inc., ABS-CBN Bantay Kalikasan Foundation and the Local Government of Quezon City.

DENR-NCR Regional Director Jacqueline A. Caancan encouraged everyone to get involved in tree planting activities to help sustain the cities amid environmental challenges as she welcomed the guests and participants in the event. “We can definitely improve our air quality here in Metro Manila by planting endemic and indigenous trees consistently and with dedication.” She said.

Meanwhile, Usec. Garcia delivered the message of Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu who was in the Visayas region at that time attending an equally important event. He said the Sec. Cimatu encourages everyone to participate in building a society that invests on green spaces and making cities sustainable, “by ensuring that the trees we have planted will make it through.”

The highlight of the activity was the planting of more than 500 saplings of indigenous and endemic trees at the DENR-NCR La Mesa Arboretum. The planted saplings include Bani (Pongamia Pinnata), Batino (Alstonia Macrophylla), Dao (Dracontomelon), Ipil (Leucaena leucocephala), Kalumpit (Terminalia Edulis), Kamagong (Diospyros discolor), Molave (Vitex parviflora), Tindalo (Afzelia rhomboidea), and Yakal (Shorea astylosa).

Philippine Arbor Day is an annual event held every June 25 by virtue of Proclamation No. 643, S-2004 signed by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
