The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) celebrated the 2017 Philippine Arbor Day on Friday, June 23, 2017 with a simultaneous tree planting/caring activity.

DENR-NCR employees and their volunteers trooped to the La Mesa Watershed Area, the Quezon City Engineered Sanitary Landfill, the Navotas Marine Tree Park, and the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area early morning to participate in the activity.

Volunteering for the activity were LGUs of Quezon City, Parañaque, Makati, San Juan, Valenzuela, and Caloocan City. They were joined by members of the Philippine Air Force; Haribon Foundation; Jason Mraz Foundation; Payatas Operations Group; Payatas Youth Development Council; and faculty and students of Our Lady of Fatima University in QC and the National Federation of Computer Technologies Inc. (NAFECOT).

In total, the volunteers planted around 6,000 seedlings of indigenous and endemic trees in all four Sustainable Integrated Area Development (SIAD) sites of DENR-NCR.

DENR-NCR Regional Director Lourdes C. Wagan thanked the volunteers and emphasized their contribution not only to the environment but to the people and communities that will in the end benefit from a greener urban ecology.

“Ang puno ay buhay natin, sumusuporta sa pangangailangan ng ating komunidad at may mahalagang ginagampanan sa ating kalikasan at kapaligiran,” she said.

Philippine Arbor Day is a yearly event celebrated on June 25 by virtue of Proclamation No. 643 signed by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
