Test Flight for LAWIN
QUEZON CITY – Foresters of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) put their hiking shoes as they took a trek inside the La Mesa Watershed Area in Quezon City on Thursday, 6 October 2016, to test the LAWIN Forest and Biodiversity Protection System application.
Developed by the DENR in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the mobile application—which runs on Android—is meant to help foresters and field workers to access and share critical information about what they find in the field in real time. This, in turn, would help policy makers and law enforcers to act on reports on issues of critical concern as well as in prosecuting violators of environmental regulations.
The activity is part of the four-day training program the DENR-NCR has organized to orient and prepare its personnel on the use and functions of LAWIN, named after the Philippine Hawk Eagle (Nisaetus philipensis). Regional Director Lourdes C. Wagan plans to introduce LAWIN to partner LGUs and organizations.
